Today’s gospel is a reminder that in the event of someone breaking a tradition or doctrine, the teaching of God to show mercy, love, compassion, understanding and forgiveness takes precedence over all traditions and practices, for God is more concerned with who we are on the inside than our outward ceremonial gestures. God is at work in our lives. He goes out of His way to meet us where we are. He does all He could to “touch” us and transform our lives, sometimes even in strange ways. He heals us in many different ways, even if it is not in the ways we expect. For, as the Prophet Isaiah says, “God’s thoughts are not our thoughts, neither are His ways our ways”, Isaiah (55:8). Today’s gospel is a reminder that the Cross has always been central to our faith, and it will always be. There can be no gospel message without the cross, and the call to be a follower of Jesus is to tread on a difficult road. Read more »
It is easy to cultivate friendship with someone who can do things for us and whose influence can be useful to us. And it is equally easy to avoid and neglect people, such as the sick, ordinary, poor, vulnerable and others who inconveniently need our help: in that way, it is neglecting God Himself. Read more »
Sin is a serious matter. It is more than an act. It is an insult to God; it is an affront to God’s holiness; it demeans God’s authority. All sin is sin against God and therefore infinitely serious. And sin brings about damnation, that is, eternal separation from God and never-ending torment in hell, from which there is no escape. Read more »
