The world around us keeps telling us to plan ahead and accumulate as much wealth as possible for a comfortable and secure life. But in today's gospel Jesus sets before us the ways of God to counter the ways of the world. Accumulation of wealth may appear to be prudent and wise but Jesus deems it foolish and dangerous because Jesus says in today's gospel, "one's life does not consist of possessions". Read more »
A certain amount of fear is normal and human but oftentimes in our life, fears become, as Thomas Aquinas puts it, “disordered” ― that is, excessive. Excessive fear can affect not only our physical and mental health but also moral life. It can cause our scope of vision to narrow; can keep us from doing what we need to do; and can drain joy out of life. Read more »
Saint Paul compares a Christian to a faithful soldier, a diligent farmer, a member of a great body and so on. All of these analogies and metaphors reflect the different aspects of Christian life. In today's text the writer sees Christian life as running a race which requires inspiration, endurance to overcome obstacles and faith to reach the goal where the reward awaits. Read more »
All Christians are called upon to deal with suffering through their faith in God. In the last two weeks, we have been studying and reflecting on Christian faith from the perspective of the writer of the letter to the Hebrews. The writer makes an earnest appeal to the oppressed Hebrew Christians to persevere in faith because they are growing weary and losing faith. Read more »
